PROVIDENCE, R.I. - DePaul sophomore Filip Dzanko was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week and Notre Dame senior Kristy Frilling was named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Dzanko recorded two wins on the week as the Blue Demons took on tough competition in No. 59 New Mexico. He overpowered No. 89 Jadon Phillips in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot for his 12th-straight singles victory. During the streak, Dzanko has defeated 10 opponents in straight sets and has beaten two ranked foes. The sophomore's second victory of the week was in doubles play, as he teamed with George Chanturia to down New Mexico's Conor Berg and Ben Dunbar 8-6.
Frilling produced three victories last week, all against ranked opposition. In singles, the senior beat North Carolina's No. 22 Lauren McHale 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 position. She also took on No. 120 Allison Falkin of Illinois, only giving up one set in a 6-0, 6-1 victory, also at the second position. The wins give Frilling three singles victories over ranked opponents this season, and improve her singles record to 6-3. In doubles, she paired with Shannon Mathews to form the No. 3 ranked team in the nation. The duo rallied from 7-6 down to win the final three games and take a victory over North Carolina's No. 24 McHale and Shinann Featherston 9-7. The win was their fourth over a ranked opponent.
This is the first weekly honor for both Dzanko and Frilling.
