PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville freshman Sebastian Stiefelmeyer was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week and USF junior Loreto Alonso Martinez was named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Feb. 28.
Stiefelmeyer recorded two wins on the week as the Cardinals took down a top-50 team in No. 41 Wake Forest on Feb. 25. Playing at the No. 1 singles position, he posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Wake's David Hopkins. Stiefelmeyer also teamed with senior Robert Hall to clinch the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Sam Wells and Conner Sherwood at No. 2 doubles. In singles play, he improved to 17-6 overall and 8-2 in dual matches while he and Hall improved to 4-3 on the season. The win was the fourth in a row for the Cardinals who advanced to 8-4 on the season.
Alonso Martinez produced five victories last week in three team wins for the Bulls over in-state rivals Central Florida, No. 22 Florida State and Florida Gulf Coast. In singles, she recorded three straight-set wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. She beat Genevieve Lorbergs of UCF 6-2, 6-1 and Mia Vriens of Florida State 6-2, 6-3, both at No. 2. In the top position, she produced a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sarah Means of FGCU. Alonso Martinez also chipped in two doubles victories for USF. She teamed with Ecaterina Vasenina for an 8-5 win over UCF's Alexis Rodriguez and Lorbegs at the No. 1 position. Against, FGCU she competed with Kate Parker to take down Gyanna Mandic and Jen Evans 8-3 at the No. 2 spot.
This is the second weekly honor for both Stiefelmeyer and Alonso Martinez.
