PROVIDENCE, R.I. - DePaul senior Matija Palinic was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while Notre Dame senior Shannon Mathews was named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Palinic produced five victories last week in three matches for DePaul. The senior won three singles matches and two doubles matches for the 73rd ranked Blue Demons against No. 61 South Alabama, No. 64 Oklahoma State and Western Michigan. In singles, he played at the No. 5 position and took down Blake Gregor of South Alabama (6-3, 6-4), Brandon Champagne of Oklahoma State (6-2, 6-3) and Zeyad Montasser of Western Michigan (6-4, 6-1). In doubles action, he teamed with Adam Reinhart to defeat OSU's Rifat Biktyakov and Adolfo Aires 8-4. The duo also topped Simon Blomberg and Montasser of WMU 8-6. Palinic's three singles victories run his streak to five matches.
Mathews won three matches last week for Notre Dame, including a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-6) singles victory over No. 110 Sonja Molnar of Iowa, the first defeat for Molnar on the season. In doubles action, she partnered with senior Kristy Frilling to defeat Morven McCulloch and Shelby Talcott of Iowa (8-1) and the No. 21 team of Beatrice Capra and Rachel Kahan of Duke (8-4). Mathews and Frilling are currently ranked as the No. 2 doubles team in the nation. Mathews' only loss of the week was a 6-7 (4-7), 2-6 defeat to Capra of Duke, who ranks as the No. 2 singles player.
