PROVIDENCE, R.I. - St. John's junior Mike Lampa was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while Notre Dame sophomore Jennifer Kellner was named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Lampa helped the Red Storm extend their winning streak to five matches and improve to 9-2 overall with the team's third consecutive 7-0 sweep over Fordham. He garnered two victories during the match, including a 6-3, 6-1 singles win over Fordham's J.J. Tauil at the 4 position. Lampa improved to a team-best 9-1 on the season with his fifth-straight singles victory. The 2010 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year also picked up his fifth doubles win of the season, teaming with Valentin Mihai for an 8-4 victory over Fordham's Peder Gram and Max Peara. With the win, St. John's improves to 7-0 at its home venue, the USTA National Tennis Center.
Kellner clinched the doubles point and the overall match in come-from-behind fashion for Notre Dame, which took down No. 20 Texas Tech 4-3 on March 12. In the No. 3 singles position she found herself down to Tech's Rashmi Teltumbde 2-6, 0-4 in the second set before turning up the pressure. She forced Teltumbde into a set tiebreaker and eventually won the match 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. In doubles action, Kellner teamed with Chrissie McGaffigan to storm back from down 0-7 in the third spot. The Irish duo scored eight unanswered points to take the match 9-8 (7-4) and earn the doubles point for ND.
This is the first weekly honor for both Lampa and Kellner.
