NEW YORK – DePaul’s Rebeca Mitrea and Robert Livi of St. John’s were named the BIG EAST Women’s and Men’s Players of the Week, respectively, on Thursday. Both players went undefeated in singles play over a busy week of competition, while Mirtrea added a sparkling doubles record to boot.
Rebeca Mitrea, Junior, DePaul
Mitrea went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles play over the weekend in the 30th-ranked Blue Demons’ two wins over Butler and No. 34 Indiana. She clinched the match at No. 6 singles for DePaul (16-1) in its critical win over the Hoosiers. The junior from Romania earned a straight set, 6-0, 6-0, win over BIG EAST foe Jocelyn Koester of Butler while pairing with Zaina Sufi for the doubles victory. Against IU, Mitrea and Sufi won 8-3 at No. 3, before Mitrea clinched the team win with a victory at No. 6, 6-4, 7-6(7-5) at No. 6.
Robert Livi, Freshman, St. John’s
Livi went 3-0 at No. 5 singles and 2-1 in doubles action last week. The St. John’s freshman sealed the Red Storm’s 4-3 win over No. 43 Santa Clara with a three-set victory, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, over Sam Bertram. It marked St. John’s first win over a ranked opponent since March 24, 2012. Livi gave the Red Storm a 2-1 lead over UC Santa Barbara with a straight-set win (6-3, 6-1) over the Gauchos’ Teague Hamilton. Livi and Michael-John Every have claimed three of their last four doubles matches including the clincher over UC Santa Barbara to give SJU the doubles point.
