PROVIDENCE, R.I. - For the second straight week, Louisville senior Austen Childs was named BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week, while Notre Dame junior Shannon Mathews claimed BIG EAST Female Tennis Player of the Week honors. This is the third conference award for Childs this season and sixth for the Cardinal men, while Mathews picks up the fourth honor for the Irish women.
Childs helped the No. 31 Cardinals down two ITA-ranked opponents last week. In Louisville's 5-2 win against No. 40 VCU April 2, the senior won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot and teamed with Adam Donaldson for an 8-6 No. 3 doubles victory. UofL defeated No. 45 USF 5-2 April 3 as 16th-ranked Childs came from behind to beat No. 73 Lucas Jovita 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Childs and Donaldson picked up an 8-1 No. 3 doubles win.
Mathews also helped the No. 20 Irish beat two ITA-ranked teams last week as Notre Dame downed No. 44 Long Beach State 5-2 April 1 and No. 32 Texas A&M 6-1 April 2. In No. 2 singles action, the 63rd-ranked junior swept LBSU 6-0, 6-2 and edged Texas A&M 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. She is 14-2 at the No. 2 position on the dual season and 14-2 when the match is decided in straight sets. She boasts a 67-24 career singles record. At No. 1 doubles last week, Mathews paired with Kristy Frilling to beat LBSU 8-3 and the Aggies 8-5. The 22nd-ranked Notre Dame duo has won 12 consecutive matches, helping the pair a 7-2 record against nationally ranked teams. Mathews and Frilling have not been forced into a tiebreaker since their last loss Feb. 12 against Michigan 7-8 (2-8).
