Notre Dame and DePaul Earn Tennis Weekly Awards Andrews and Fargas named Players of the Week.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Notre Dame junior Greg Andrews was named BIG EAST Player of the Week in men's tennis for the fourth time this year and DePaul sophomore Patricia Fargas was named BIG EAST Player of the Week in women's tennis in the 12th weekly awards of the spring 2013 season.
Andrews, ranked No. 109 in the nation, went 3-0 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles action to help lead the No. 31 Fighting Irish (15-7, 2-0 BIG EAST) to a 3-0 week with wins over No. 65 SMU (6-1), USF (6-1) and Butler (7-0). The junior won all three singles matches from the No. 1 position including a win over No. 124 Arturs Kazijevs of SMU 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-5) and a 6-4, 6-2 win against Oliver Pramming of USF. Andrews won two matches in doubles play when paired with Matt Dooley in the No. 3 spot. The duo claimed an 8-6 win against SMU and an 8-3 win against USF. He was also paired with Alex Lawson against Butler in the No. 1 spot and claimed the match 8-2.
Fargas was 2-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles to help DePaul (11-8, 1-3 BIG EAST) claim its second win of the season against a ranked team. The Blue Demons went 1-1 last week with a 6-1 win against No. 64 Central Florida and 5-2 loss to No. 57 USF. The sophomore won 6-0, 6-2 from the No. 3 spot against Josephine Haraldson of the Knights and 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 against Loreto Alonso-Martinez of the Bulls in the No. 2 position. Fargas was paired with Jasmin Kling in doubles. The duo played in the No. 2 spot and won 9-7 against Central Florida.
This is the last week of regular season play before teams prepare for the BIG EAST Championships April 18-21. This year, men's teams will play at the Courtney Tennis Center in South Bend, Ind. on the campus of Notre Dame. The women's teams will play on the Varsity Courts of USF in Tampa, Fla.
