PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville senior Andrew Carter was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while USF sophomore Loreto Alonso Martinez was named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Carter recorded two singles victories and one doubles win for the Cardinals last week. Louisville downed Eastern Kentucky and Wright State to improve to 15-8 on the season. Carter picked up two straight-set singles victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. He beat EKU's Niklas Schroeder 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 and topped WSU's Martin Arguello 6-3, 6-4 as the top seed. In doubles, he teamed with Albert Wagner for an 8-3 victory over Wright State's Jamison Clark and Hayden Joblin. Carter and Wagner are currently ranked No. 64 with a 10-5 overall record.
Martinez led USF with three singles victories and a doubles win in four matches last week. The Bulls matched up against VCU, UNC-Wilmington, Georgia State and Marquette in two days, recording a 2-2 record. Martinez led the way with a 3-0 singles record at the No. 2 spot, including straight-set victories over Georgia State's Tereza Lerova (7-5, 6-3) and Marquette's Olga Fischer (7-6, 6-4). She also fought back from a first set loss to secure a win over UNCW's Olga Blank, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Her victory over Marquette's Fischer was the clinching point for the Bulls. In doubles, Martinez teamed with Ecaterina Vasenina at the top seed to edge Lerova and Abigail Tere-Apisah of UNCW 8-5.
This is the first weekly honor for Carter and the third for Martinez.
