PROVIDENCE, R.I. - St. John's sophomore Mike Lampa was named BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week, while Georgetown junior Lauren Greco claimed BIG EAST Female Tennis Player of the Week honors.
Lampa helped the Red Storm go 2-0 last week as they beat Temple 5-2 and Villanova 6-1 April 9 on the road, extending their winning streak to seven matches. The sophomore went undefeated in singles play, winning 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 3 spot against Temple and posting a pair of 6-2 victories at the No. 2 position against the Wildcats. He teamed with junior Stefan Bojic to edge Temple's No. 2 doubles pair 8-6. Against Villanova, the St. John's duo dropped a hard-fought 8-4 decision. With the two singles wins, Lampa has won eight-straight matches, improving to 15-6 on the season. The 2010 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year has won 13 of his last 14 singles matches.
Greco went 4-0 last week, helping the Hoyas edge Rutgers 4-3 April 9 and defeat Seton Hall 6-1 April 10. After being down 5-2 in the first set against RU, she battled back to claim a 7-5, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles. The junior followed the come-from-behind victory by retiring her Pirate opponent 7-5, 3-0 also at the No. 2 position. In No. 2 doubles action, she paired with sophomore Vicky Sekely to beat the Scarlet Knights and the Pirates in successive 8-2 victories. Greco is 16-10 in singles this season, while Greco and Sekely improved to 5-0 in doubles.
