PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Notre Dame sophomore Greg Andrews was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while Irish senior Shannon Mathews was named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Andrews produced two victories last week as No. 39 Notre Dame took down No. 38 Louisville 5-2. In singles, the sophomore earned a 7-5, 6-3 win over Andrew Carter at the No. 2 spot. He also teamed with Spencer Talmadge for an 8-4 doubles victory over Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Robert Hall. Andrews, ranked No. 64 in the ITA rankings, has recorded a 22-3 singles mark and a 17-8 doubles record this season. The Irish are the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Championship, which will take place April 19-22 in Tampa, Fla.
Mathews led Notre Dame to victories last week over No. 40 USF and Louisville. In singles action, she downed USF's No. 42 Ecaterina Vasenina 6-2, 6-0 and topped Louisville's Julia Fellerhoff 7-6, 6-0, both at the top seed. Mathews and teammate Kristy Frilling, who comprise the nation's fifth-ranked doubles team, earned two wins as the top doubles seed. They took down USF's No. 49 Vasenina and Loreto Alonso Martinez 8-4 and also beat Louisville's Fellerhoff and Mandy Brown 8-4. Mathews has defeated five nationally ranked opponents on the season.
The Irish are the No. 1 seed in the both the men's and women's BIG EAST Championship, which will take place April 19-22 in Tampa, Fla.
This is the third weekly honor for both Andrews and Mathews.
