Notre Dame's Shannon Mathews Chosen BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST Conference announced that Notre Dame senior Shannon Mathews has been selected as the 2012 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

The conference also revealed the selection of DePaul's Jasmin Kling as BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and Notre Dame head coach Jay Louderback as BIG EAST Coach of the Year.

Mathews was chosen as BIG EAST Player of the Year after going 20-9 in singles action and 28-9 in doubles in 2011-12.  She spent the majority of the dual season playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and has spent the season ranked in the ITA rankings at both spots.  Mathews is currently ranked No. 32 in singles, her highest ranking of the season, and spent two weeks as the No. 1 doubles pair with classmate Kristy Frilling.  The senior, and four-time member of the All-BIG EAST Team, led the Irish to their fifth-consecutive conference title in 2012.  This marks the fourth-straight year a Notre Dame player has won Player of the Year honors.

Kling earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors after registering a 15-9 singles record and a 16-10 mark in doubles.  The Heilbronn, Germany, native joined the team in January and has played primarily at the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles position.  She currently sits at No. 103 in the ITA singles rankings, her highest ranking of the season.  Kling paired with senior Gia McKnight to debut at No. 64 in the March 27 rankings and have appeared in the top-85 since.  In the 2012 BIG EAST Championship, she helped guide the Blue Demons to a third-place finish.

Louderback was chosen as BIG EAST Coach of the Year after leading his team to its fifth-straight BIG EAST title and 12th overall.  This also is the third-consecutive year he has earned the coaching honor.  The Fighting Irish are currently ranked No. 18 and have been placed in the top-25 of the ITA rankings for the duration of the 2012 season.

The BIG EAST also announced the 12-player All-BIG EAST team, which includes Mathews and Kling among its ranks. Notre Dame leads all schools with three selections to the all-conference team.  Joining Mathews are senior Kristy Frilling, a two-time BIG EAST Player of the Year, and sophomore Britney Sanders.  USF and Louisville both have two athletes on the team; sophomore Loreto Alonso Martinez and junior Ecaterina Vasenina for the Bulls and sophomores Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine for the Cardinals.  DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Syracuse are also represented, with one player apiece.
