PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville senior Simon Childs was named BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week, while Notre Dame senior Kristen Rafael earned BIG EAST Female Tennis Player of the Week honors. Childs picked up the eighth conference award for the Cardinal men this season, while Rafael notched her team's fifth weekly accolade.
Childs helped the Cardinals climb from No. 29 to No. 24 in the ITA Tennis Rankings after edging then-No. 28 Notre Dame 4-3 April 23. The senior's win at No. 1 doubles earned UofL the doubles point and his win at No. 3 singles decided the match. Childs paired with senior Viktor Maksimcuk to defeat Niall Fitzgerald and Spencer Talmadge 8-6. The Cardinal duo is ranked No. 59 in the ITA rankings. In singles action, Childs beat No. 109 Daniel Stahl 6-3, 6-4. He improved to 14-9 on the season.
Rafael led Notre Dame to a 6-1 win over DePaul April 23. As the lone senior on the Irish roster, she clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Christiana Raymond at No. 4 singles on Senior Day. Rafael has won five consecutive matches since moving to the No. 4 position and holds 10-9 record in singles play this season. In those five matches at the No. 4 court, she has not dropped a set. In doubles action, Rafael teamed with Chrissie McGraffigan to finish off the doubles sweep of DePaul with an 8-2 win in the No. 2 slot.
