First and Second Seeds Advance to the Finals at BIG EAST Tennis Championships

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - No. 1 seed Louisville and No. 2 seed Notre Dame are set to square off for the 2011 Men's BIG EAST Tennis Championship, while top seeded Notre Dame and No. 2 seed USF will play for the 2011 Women's BIG EAST Tennis Championship hosted by the University of Notre Dame. The teams will vie for the league's automatic berth into the 32-team NCAA Championships. This morning, No. 1 seed Louisville blanked No. 5 seed St. John's 4-0, while No. 2 seed Notre Dame defeated No. 3 seed USF 4-1. The Cardinals and Irish advance to championship match tomorrow at 9 a.m., while the Red Storm and the Bulls battle for third place tomorrow at noon. Mirroring the 2010 title match-up, the Cardinals look to defend their title. This is the fourth time overall and second-straight year UofL and ND have met in the championship final. Louisville defeated Notre Dame in 2006 for the BIG EAST Championship. The following year, the Irish spoiled the Cardinals' hopes of a repeat conference crown, when ND earned the 2007 title. Louisville ranks No. 24 in nation, while the tournament host ranks No. 30. On the women's side, No. 1 seed Notre Dame beat No. 5 seed Marquette 4-1, while No. 2 seed USF shutout No. 3 seed DePaul 4-0. The Irish women are ranked 23rd in the ITA poll, while USF comes in at No. 42 as the teams advance to the championship final tomorrow at 9 a.m. The Golden Eagles and the Blue Demons play for third place at noon. This marks the fourth time the Irish have battled the Bulls in the league championship, including three-straight match-ups from 2006-2008. ND claimed the conference crown in 2006 and 2008, while USF took home top honors in 2007. The Notre Dame women have won the BIG EAST Championship in five of the last six seasons. The Irish have been a part of the title match in all 15 years as a member of the conference and will be vying for their 11th championship and fourth-straight. The Bulls will seek their second BIG EAST Championship. Both championship finals begin at 9 a.m. at the Courtney Tennis Center on the Notre Dame campus.
