PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Notre Dame women's tennis team and the Louisville and Notre Dame men's tennis teams have been selected to participate in the 2012 NCAA Tennis Championships, set to begin May 11-13 with first and second round action. The NCAA finals will be held in Athens, Ga., at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex May 17-22.
The Notre Dame women will face Hawaii on May 11 at Northwestern University. The Irish face a potential rematch with Northwestern, the team that knocked them out of the NCAA tournament in the second round a year ago.
ND earned its bid after winning its fifth-straight, and 12th overall, BIG EAST Championship title. The Irish are led by seniors Kristy Frilling and Shannon Mathews. Frilling, the 2012 BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Performer, and Mathews, the 2012 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Year, are each ranked in singles (No. 110 and No. 32, respectively) and combine to form the No. 8 doubles pair in the nation.
In men's action, Louisville will pair up against Indiana at the University of Kentucky, while Notre Dame will face Vanderbilt at Ohio State University in the first round.
The Cardinals wrapped up their third-straight BIG EAST Championship crown to earn their spot in the NCAA tournament. Sebastian Stiefelmeyer, the 2012 BIG EAST Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year and BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Performer, will look to lead Louisville to the NCAA finals. Last season, UofL lost in the second round to in-state rival Kentucky.
Notre Dame earned an at-large bid to the championship after a third-place finish at this year's BIG EAST Championship. The Irish are led by 2012 BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Year sophomore Greg Andrews. Last season, ND fell in the second round to national semifinalist Ohio State.
