EVANSTON, Ill. -- The DePaul women's tennis team fell to Notre Dame, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon in Evanston.

The 28th-ranked Irish improved to 17-9 with the win and will take on the winner of the Northwestern-Miami (Ohio) match in the second round Saturday.

For the 46th-ranked Blue Demons, their season comes to a close with a 22-4 overall mark.

Notre Dame got the day started by winning 2-of-3 doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the contest. DePaul's lone win in the doubles schedule was posted by Rebeca Mitrea and Zaina Sufi, who defeated Mary Closs and Molly O'Koniewski, 8-7 (3), in the No. 3 match.

The Blue Demons found themselves in a 2-0 hole after senior Kelsey Lawson dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match to Monica Robinson at No. 4 singles and then trailed 3-0 after Mitrea fell to lost to Julie Vrabel, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.

The Fighting Irish clinched the match when Britney Sanders knocked off Patricia Fargas in the No. 1 singles match, 6-3, 6-3.

The NCAA Tournament berth for the Blue Demons was their first since the 2010 season. Their 2014 outstanding season saw them win 16 consecutive matches and climb to as high as No. 25 in the ITA National Rankings.
