Notre Dame's Frilling, USF's Rehberger Named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Players of the Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST Conference has announced that Notre Dame junior Kristy Frilling and USF senior Irene Rehberger have been chosen as the 2011 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Players of the Year.

The conference also announced the selection of Louisville's Julia Fellerhoff as BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and Notre Dame head coach Jay Louderback as BIG EAST Coach of the Year.

Frilling was chosen as BIG EAST Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after she went 26-5 in singles play and 21-5 in doubles in 2010-11. She played exclusively at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and was 18-3 at both spots in dual matches, helping Notre Dame to the BIG EAST Championship and a spot in the NCAA Championship. Frilling is ranked No. 5 in singles and No. 15 in doubles in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings of the regular season and was an automatic selection to both the NCAA singles and doubles championships.

Rehberger was named BIG EAST Player of the Year for the first time after she ended the regular season ranked No. 35 nationally in singles, playing at the No. 1 position. She was 21-12 overall in singles play, including a 14-7 mark in dual matches to help USF to a runner-up finish at the BIG EAST Championship. Rehberger was chosen to the singles draw of the NCAA Championship after she registered five wins against nationally rated players in 2010-11.

Fellerhoff earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors after she registered a 15-8 record in singles play in dual matches, playing at the No. 1 spot. Additionally, she was the individual winner at the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational, Purdue Fall Invitational and the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational and was the runner-up at the Michigan State Fall Invitational.

Louderback was chosen as BIG EAST Coach of the Year after taking Notre Dame to the NCAA Championship for the 18th time in his 22 years with the Fighting Irish. He won his 11th BIG EAST title this season and has claimed the conference championship in each of the last four years. Notre Dame is ranked No. 20 in the most recent ITA team rating and will make its 16th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance when the Irish begin play against Northwestern Friday.

The BIG EAST also announced the 12-player All-BIG EAST team, which includes Frilling, Rehberger and Fellerhoff among its ranks. Notre Dame and USF accounted for half of the squad, with three players from each team chosen, while DePaul had two players selected. Georgetown, Louisville, Rutgers and Syracuse had one player each on the All-BIG EAST team.
