BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Weekly Awards

Three schools were represented in the latest BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field weekly honors, announced on Tuesday. Louisville swept the BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week awards, with sophomore Khadija Abdullah earning BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week and senior Weston Banks notching BIG EAST Male Field Athlete of the Week. Notre Dame sophomore Jeremy Rae was named BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week and Connecticut junior Heather Wilson was named BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Week. Abdullah was named BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week for the first time this season after winning the shot put at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet on Feb. 5. The sophomore had a toss of 16.59 meters, her second best throw of the year, which ranks second in the conference and 10th nationally. Abdullah already owns the best throw in the BIG EAST this season at 16.96 meters. She is the second Louisville thrower to be named BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week along with D'Ana McCarty. Banks earned BIG EAST Male Field Athlete of the Week for the first time this season after finishing third in the shot put and ninth in the weight throw at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet on Feb. 5. The senior set a pair of career-best marks with a throw of 17.85 meters in the shot put and 18.51 meters in the weight throw. He stands second in the BIG EAST and 23rd nationally in the shot put, while his weight throw ranks third in the conference. Wilson was named BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after setting the Connecticut 800-meter record with a time of 2:05.68 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational Championship on Feb. 4. The time ranks fourth in the nation and first in the BIG EAST. Wilson also anchored the distance medley relay team that broke the Connecticut record by over 24 seconds with a time of 11:11.93, which stands seventh in the nation and first in the conference. The junior ran the 1,600 meter portion of the event in 4:44.50. Rae garnered BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week after running a sub four-minute mile at the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 5. Rae won the event with a time of 3:59.62, which ranks first in the BIG EAST and fourth in the country this season. The final BIG EAST Track and Field Weekly awards will be released on Feb. 15, 2011.
