Cincinnati Leads First Week of BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Cincinnati's Mackenzie Fields was named BIG EAST Women's Field Athlete of the Week and Terrence Somerville earned BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors to kick off the outdoor track & field season. Rutgers senior James Plummer was named BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week and Notre Dame's Megan Yanik earned BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week accolades.

 

Fields finished first for the second straight week in the pole vault, recording a mark of 4.05m (13'3.5'') at the UCF Invitational on March 23-24. The senior's vault tops the league and is ranked 10th nationally, as well as ranking sixth in Cincinnati outdoor program history.

 

Plummer was named BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week after taking second place at the Bulls Invitational on March 15-16 in the discus. The senior's throw of 58.03m ranks first in the league and fifth nationally.

 

Somerville finished first in the 110-meter hurdles at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa to be named BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week. The senior's time of 13.72 is the fastest in the BIG EAST and ranks third nationally. Somerville topped a final heat that included five of the top 15 times in the country.

 

Yanik earned BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week accolades after finishing first in the 400m hurdles and helping the 4x400m relay to a first-place finish at the Victor Lopez Invitational on March 21-23. The junior took first in the hurdles with a time of 59.06, which ranks first in the league and seventh nationally.

 

According to the NCAA, "qualification to the [NCAA] championships is based on the descending-order list for the season...for each individual event contested, the top 16 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition. For each relay contested, the top 12 relay teams will be accepted into the competition...There are no qualifying standards for the championships season."

 

BIG EAST Track & Field News and Notes

  • League Competes at Victor Lopez Invite
    • St. John's senior Molly Ellis posted the top BIG EAST 400m time of the season when she finished second (53.96). The time was a career best and is tied for 14th nationally.
    • Notre Dame sophomore Mary Esther Gourdin finished first in the triple jump with a mark of 11.90m, which ranks first in the league for the outdoor season.
    • On the men's side, Notre Dame sophomore Chris Giesting finished first in the 200m (21.27) and helped the 4x400m relay team to a first-place finish (3:07.65).
  • Ruth sets new Bulls Invitational record
  • Rutgers junior Asha Ruth set a new meet record at the Bulls Invitational last weekend in the long jump with a mark of 6.07m.
  • The junior's mark currently tops the league and ranks 14th nationally.
  • Louisville sophomore Calvin Arsenault recorded a time of 14.19 in the 110m hurdles and 52.03 in the 400m hurdles at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invite.
  • The sophomore tied the Cardinals program record in the 400m hurdles and is now ranked third in the 110m hurdles.
  • His performance on the 4x400m relay (3:14.39) also ranks the squad fourth in the Louisville outdoor track & field record books. 
  • Arsenault climbs the Louisville outdoor record book
