Connecticut Sweeps BIG EAST Field Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Connecticut seniors Victoria Flowers and Cody Unger were named BIG EAST Field Athletes of the Week after combining for three first-place finishes in throwing events last week. Notre Dame's Rebecca Tracy earned BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week accolades and Pittsburgh's Carvin Nkanata was named BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week.  

 

Flowers took first in the shot put (16.10m) and hammer throw (62.36m) at the UMass Invitational on April 13. The senior's mark in the hammer throw ranks first in the league by more than four meters and 13th in the nation. Her shot put toss ranks second in the BIG EAST.

 

Unger won the javelin at the LSU Battle on the Bayou on April 13 with a mark of 68.37m to be named BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week. The senior's toss ranks first in the league and 20th in the nation.

 

Tracy earned BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors after finishing first in the 800m (2:07.12) and the 1,500m (4.17.12) at the Kentuckiana Border Battle on April 13. The defending BIG EAST 1,500m champion set a meet record at Louisville Cardinal Park. The senior's 1,500m time ranks first in the conference and fourth in the nation.

 

Nkanata recorded a first-second-and third-place finish at the Aggie Invitational on April 12. The junior ran the second leg of the winning 4x400m relay (3:08.64), finished second in the 200m (21.03), and took third place in the 400m (46.67). The defending indoor 200m champion currently ranks first in the league in both the 200m and 400m.

 

League teams are less than one month away from the 2013 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Rutgers will host the conference championships in Piscataway, N.J., May 3-5.
