BIG EAST Performance List

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- League outdoor track & field teams travel to Piscataway, N.J., this week for the 2013 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Rutgers at the Bauer Track & Field Complex on May 3-5. The first events will begin at 11:00 a.m., on Friday with the decathlon and heptathlon. Hammer throw trials and finals for men and women will also be on Friday.

Men's Team Overview

Notre Dame makes a strong case for its second consecutive championship with the return of Christopher Giesting. The sophomore was the 2012 BIG EAST Men's Outdoor Track Most Outstanding Performer after winning the 200m and 400m. Patrick Feeney and Jeremy Rae also return for the Fighting Irish. Giesting, Feeney and Rae combined for 55 of Notre Dame's 153 points between relays and individual events last season.

Feeney ranks first in the BIG EAST in the 200m with a time of 20.96 and first in the 400m with his NCAA indoor championship time of 45.92. Giesting ranks sixth in the 200m at 21.24 and third in the 400m with a time of 46.05 on the BIG EAST performance list. Rae ranks second in the league in the 1,500m with a time of 3:41.45, a mark more than nine seconds faster than his winning 1,500m time at last year's championship.

In the sprints, Notre Dame's Feeney and Giesting will run against a few familiar faces from Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh's Brycen Spratling and Carvin Nkanata were members of the indoor 4x400m relay team that denied Notre Dame the BIG EAST title at the SPIRE Institute in February.

Connecticut aims to sweep the 2013 BIG EAST track championships with a win at Bauer Track & Field Complex. The Huskies won the BIG EAST indoor title by 36.5 points. The Huskies look to capitalize on the decathlon, where they had four competitors finish in scoring position in the heptathlon at the 2013 indoor championship. Senior Jake Waruch won the 2012 decathlon title. Seniors Jesse Chapman and Ben Waruch currently rank second and sixth respectively, on the BIG EAST performance list.

The Huskies also return defending high jump champion Noel James. The senior's mark of 2.14m is the second-best in the BIG EAST and .04 meters better than his winning jump at the 2012 championship.

Women's Team Overview

Louisville returns top throwers Amashi-Ali Kendall and Khadija Abdullah in the chase for its sixth straight league title. Kendall is the defending hammer throw champion, while Abdullah won the discus throw in 2012. Abdullah also won the shot put in 2010. Abdullah and Kendall rank 1-2 in the shot put on the BIG EAST performance list and Kendall tops the discus. Kendall was named the 2012 BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Field Performer.

While Abdullah and Kendall stack the throwing events, the Cardinals also return top high jumper Michelle Kinsella. The senior set a meet record in 2012 with a jump of 1.86m and tops the BIG EAST this season with a mark of 1.88m.

Margret Harris helps Louisville in the sprints, ranking eighth in the 100m and fourth in the 400m on the BIG EAST performance list. The senior took first in the 60m and third in the 200m at the 2013 BIG EAST indoor championship.

Notre Dame will challenge Louisville with a combination of depth and experience. The Fighting Irish won the 2012 BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championship by 32 points and placed second last year. Notre Dame has only won the BIG EAST outdoor title once before in 2007.

Rebecca Tracy leads Notre Dame in the middle distances. The senior won the 1,500m in 2012 and won the mile run at the indoor championship in February. Sophomores Jade and Kaila Barber, juniors Michelle Brown and Megan Yanik will also prove key contributors to Notre Dame's success. The Barbers provide depth in the sprints, hurdles and horizontal jumps while Brown and Yanik focus on the 400m distance.

Last Time Out

At the 2012 BIG EAST Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship, a total of eight meet records were set in the 100m, 100m hurdles, 200m, 400m hurdles 5,000m, high jump, shot put and javelin throw. Of those records, two were broken by returning competitors. Louisville's Michelle Kinsella broke the high jump record set in 2010 with a mark of 1.86m. Providence's Emily Sisson broke a 28 year-old record in the 5,000m with a time of 15:45.83. The previous record of 15:45.04 was set by Georgetown's Suzanne Girard in 1984. Girard was the 1985 U.S. National 5,000m champion.

NCAA's on the Horizon

Entering BIG EAST championships, 31 league performances rank in the top-20 nationally, including 13 for the men and 18 for the women. Notre Dame leads all institutions with eight national top 20 marks and 11 league teams are represented.
