VILLANOVA, Pa. - After the first day of competition at the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova Stadium, the men's and women's hammer throw champions have been crowned. Louisville senior D'Ana McCarty won the event on the women's side, while Notre Dame senior John Belcher grabbed the men's title. With one event scored, Louisville leads the women's team standings with 13 points and DePaul is second with eight. For the men, Notre Dame leads with 18 points and Connecticut stands second with eight. Athletes also competed in the first half of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon.

McCarty notched her first career BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championship title after winning the women's hammer throw. She registered a mark of 59.59 meters, topping DePaul junior Melissa Fraser by more than four meters. Fraser took second (55.31 meters) while USF junior Lauren Noe placed third (54.02 meters).

Syracuse junior Kelsey Rubeor leads the women's heptathlon with 3,328 points through four events. Rubeor, who ranked second on the conference performance list in the heptathlon entering the meet, won the shot put with a distance of 13.82 meters. The junior also finished third in both the high jump and the 200-meter dash. Rubeor looks to become the fifth-straight Syracuse athlete to win the event.

Notre Dame junior Maddie Buttinger, the runner-up in the heptathlon in 2010, stands second with 3,290 points. Buttinger won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.02. West Virginia senior Katelyn Williams sits in third with 3,165 points. The athletes will finish the heptathlon with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run tomorrow.

Belcher, who finished second in the men's hammer throw in 2010, won his first career BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field title with a toss of 58.89 meters. The senior paced three Irish athletes who scored in the event. Classmate Greg Davis took third (55.89 meters) and junior Mitchell Gormley placed seventh (53.91 points) to give Notre Dame 18 points after the first day. Connecticut sophomore Joshua Faboyede placed second with a toss of 57.47 meters.

Connecticut junior Aaron King leads the decathlon with 3,924 points after five events. King won the long jump and shot put events, while placing second in the high jump and 100-meter dash. If King holds on to win, he'd be the first BIG EAST athlete to win the Indoor heptathlon and the Outdoor decathlon in the same year.

Notre Dame freshman Alex Bavis is second with 3,466 points and Rutgers junior Mike Baird is third with 3,455 points. Notre Dame senior Justin Schneider was ranked second coming into the 400, but came up limping on the back straightaway and did not finish the event. The athletes will compete in the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.

The second day of the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships will begin at 9:00 a.m., tomorrow, May 7, with the men's decathlon running the 110-meter hurdles and the women's heptathlon competing in the javelin.
