Three BIG EAST Teams Place in Top 10 at ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Three BIG EAST women's teams placed in the top 10 at the 2011 ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Connecticut, the runner-up at the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships, led all BIG EAST teams in second with 65 points. Syracuse finished seventh with 30 points and Pittsburgh came in ninth with 27 points. Eight BIG EAST athletes claimed titles individually.
 
The Huskies finished second behind Duke, which tallied 73.75 points to take the team title. Connecticut was paced by senior Tynisha McMillan, who brought home first in two throwing events. McMillan won the shot put with a toss of 15.86 meters and the discus with a throw of 48.34 meters. Freshman Ilva Bikanova also grabbed an ECAC title in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.81 meters. Junior Meghan Cunningham and sophomore Whitney Holder also had top three finishes for the Huskies. Cunningham took third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:22.42, while Holder finished second in the long jump with a leap of 6.06 meters.
 
Syracuse finished seventh with two individuals winning events. Junior Fling Owusu-Agyapong won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.79. The 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor triple jump champion, Ieva Staponkute, also claimed the ECAC title in the event with a leap of 12.85 meters.
 
Pittsburgh rounded out the BIG EAST top 10 finishers. Junior Cambrya Jones was the lone event champion for the Panthers, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.73. Sophomore Elizabeth Kline finished third in the heptathlon, totaling 4,633 points while winning both the 200-meter dash and the long jump.
 
The Georgetown 4x800-meter relay team won the ECAC title, as the team of junior London Finley, sophomore Amanda Kimbers, junior Chela Green and senior Deidra Sanders added on to their BIG EAST title by finishing with a time of 3:38.61. Villanova junior Shericka Ward rounded out the BIG EAST even champions, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 13.45.
 
The BIG EAST Women's Outdoor Track & Field teams will next compete at the NCAA East Regionals on May 26-28 in Bloomington, Ind.
