BIG EAST Track & Field Athletes Set For 2012 NCAA Championships

Providence, R.I. - BIG EAST track & field athletes head to Des Moines, Iowa, this week for the 2012 NCAA Championships on June 6-9, hosted by Drake University. The BIG EAST earned 43 entries on the women's side, the sixth-most entries for any conference in the country. The men's side earned 18 entries, which ranks sixth in the country, from eight different institutions. Entering the NCAA Championship, only one women's team is ranked in the USTFCCA top-25, as Louisville comes in at No. 20. At least one BIG EAST athlete has won an NCAA individual title in each of the last three outdoor championships. ESPN will televise the meet live on Thursday from 6:15 p.m.-10:15 p.m. and on Friday from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday coverage will be on ESPNU from 12 p.m.-2 p.m. All times are Eastern.



800m Run

Villanova's Samuel Ellison will represent the BIG EAST in the 800m run. Ellison won the BIG EAST title this season with a mark of 1:50.99. He enters the competition seeded seventh with a season-best mark of 1:47.76.


1,500m Run

Johnathan Shawel of Notre Dame is coming off a national championship in the men's Distance Medley Relay at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He is seeded 13th with a time of 3:46.26. Sam McEntee of Villanova has also qualified for the event with a time of 3:48.73.


10,000m Run

Four BIG EAST athletes will compete in the 10,000m run. Tito Medrano of Syracuse posted the sixth best time in the nation with a mark of 30:05.75.  BIG EAST champion Mark Dennin posted the eighth best time in the nation at 30:09.74. Alexander Lundy of Georgetown enters with a qualifying mark of 30:18.89 while Martin Grady of Notre Dame posted a time of 30:37.85.


110m Hurdles

Jarret Eaton of Syracuse will look to win the 110m hurdles after winning the NCAA 60m hurdles indoor championship earlier in the year. He enters the event with the fifth best time in the nation at 13.44. Josh Thompson of Pittsburgh also qualified for the event with a mark of 13.87


400m Hurdles

USF's David Aristil enters the meet with the second fastest qualifying time in the nation with a mark of 49.60. Jermaine Lowery of Pittsburgh, the 2012 BIG EAST champion will also compete in the event. Lowery posted a qualifying mark of 50.65.


Pole Vault

Kevin Schipper of Notre Dame, a 2010 outdoor All-American will be competing in his second NCAA Outdoor Championship. He qualified with a season-best mark of 5.32m and is seeded 14th entering the championship.



Jake Waruch of Connecticut will represent the BIG EAST in the decathlon. This year's BIG EAST Champion enters as the 17th seeded athlete. His performance of 7,597 at the UConn Decathlon was his highest total of the season.



100m Dash & 200m Dash

Cambrya Jones of Pittsburgh captured both the 100m dash and 200m dash at the BIG EAST Championship. The senior has qualified for both events at the NCAA Championship. Her time of 11.35 in the 100m dash makes her puts her 11th in the nation while her mark of 22.72 in the 200 is the third fastest time in the nation.


800m Run

Three BIG EAST athletes qualified for the women's 800m run. Kathy Klump of Cincinnati, who finished third at the BIG EAST Championships, registered the eighth fastest time nationally this year with a mark of 2:05.05. BIG EAST champion Heather Wilson of Connecticut enters the event with the 10th best time of 2:05.35. Georgetown's Chelsea Cox is the 17th seed with a season best mark of 2:06.12.


1,500m Run

Rebecca Tracy of Notre Dame qualified for the 1,500m run with a time of 4:16.94. Georgetown will have two entries in the event including Emily Infeld the NCAA indoor champion in the 3,000, who qualified with a time of 4:19.14 and Rachel Schneider with a mark of 4:19.73.


5,000m Run

Seven of the 24 athletes who will compete for the 5,000m title come from the BIG EAST. The group is led by BIG EAST champion Emily Sisson of Providence who enters with the third fastest time at 15:53.62. Villanova's Sheila Reid, who has won five NCAA individual titles, including last year's 5,000m crown, posted a season-best time of 16:13.47, the seventh fastest time in the nation this year. Others competing in the event include Madeline Chambers of Georgetown, Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll of Providence, Lauren Penney of Syracuse, Jessica O'Connell of West Virginia and Bogdana Mimic of Villanova.


High Jump

St. John's high jumper Priscilla Frederick jumped 1.81m this season and is seeded fourth entering the competition. Louisville's Michelle Theophille and Maggie Gilbertson will also compete for the high jump title after both cleared 1.77m.


Shot Put

Louisville's Khadija Abdullah is the fifth seed in the women's shot put competition with a mark of 17.12m. Teammate Chinwe Okoro will also compete and is the seventh seed with a qualifying mark of 16.86m.


DePaul's Melissa Fraser enters the competition as the top seeded thrower with a mark of 52.96m. Teammate Alanna Kovacs enters the event with the eighth best mark on the performance list with a 49.59m throw. Cincinnati's Emelie Larsson will also be competing as she qualified 15th with a mark of 48.48m.


Chelsea Carrier-Eades of West Virginia enters the championship seeded fourth in the heptathlon with a mark of 5,821 points. She will also compete in the 110m hurdles where she is ranked 12th with a mark of 13.10. BIG EAST champion Jasmine Cotton of Cincinnati will also compete in the event. Cotton qualified with 5,422 points, which seeds her 22nd.
