Louisville's Matt Hughes Leads BIG EAST Contingent With National Title at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

"

EUGENE, Ore. - Louisville junior Matt Hughes captured the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase national title to highlight BIG EAST's performances at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held June 9-12 at the University of Oregon. The first-place finish of 8:34.18 minutes catapulted the Cardinals to a 17th-place finish in the team standings with 15 points, leading the conference's men's teams. On the women's side, four top-10 finishes for West Virginia pushed the Mountaineers to 16th place in the team standings, leading all BIG EAST squads.

Hughes started off the championship season strong, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000 meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships in April. The national title is the first for Hughes and the first won by a Cardinal in the outdoor season.

WVU was led by senior Marie-Louise Asselin who captured her seventh-career all-America honor when she crossed the line second in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:53.93. Classmate Clara Grandt also earned a top-five finish for the Mountaineers, taking fourth in the 10,000 meters in 33:23.22.
