DePaul and Notre Dame Split BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Weekly Awards




PROVIDENCE, R.I. - DePaul and Notre Dame have split the season's first BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field weekly awards as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. DePaul claimed both Male and Female BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week awards, as senior Tim Nedow was named Male Field Athlete of the Week and senior Alanna Kovacs earned Female Field Athlete of the Week. Notre Dame garnered both BIG EAST Male and Female Track Athlete of the Week honors as freshman Christopher Giesting was named Male Track Athlete of the Week and freshman Kaila Barber was named Female Track Athlete of the Week.
 
Nedow was named BIG EAST Male Field Athlete of the Week after his 19.51-meter throw in the shot put set a DePaul record. Additionally, the throw qualified him for both the BIG EAST Indoor Championships and the NCAA Indoor Championships. Nedow was the only competitor at the Blue and Gold Invitational in any event to register an NCAA qualifying mark. His six throws were the six best of the competition, with his shortest throw coming in at 17.75 meters, almost a meter ahead of the next closest thrower. Nedow also added one other throw of over 19 meters at 19:10. Five of his six throws were over 18 meters in distance.
 
Kovacs garnered BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week after her 14.51-meter shot put set a DePaul record. Both her shot put and her weight throw marks qualified her for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. Her 17.08 meter weight throw also qualified for the BIG EAST Indoors. She was one of just two throwers to register a weight throw of over 17 meters.
 
Giesting earned BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week after he won two events in his first college meet at the Blue & Gold Invitational. His time of 47.40 in the 400-meter dash ranks first nationally and qualified him for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. He also ran the final leg of the 4X400m relay which finished first in a time of 3:18.36.
 
Barber was named BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Week after placing first in four events. She qualified for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in three individual events.  She ran a time of 56.83 in the 400m and a 8.51 in the 60m hurdles. Those times both rank third nationally. She helped the 4x400m relay team post a time of 3:51.49 while winning the long jump with a leap of 5.65 meters.
 
The next BIG EAST Track and Field Weekly Awards will be released on Jan. 17, 2012.
