Georgetown and Louisville Split BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Georgetown and Louisville have split the season's first BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field weekly awards as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Louisville claimed both Male and Female BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week awards, as junior Wesley Smith was named Male Field Athlete of the Week and senior D'Ana McCarty earned Female Field Athlete of the Week. Georgetown garnered both BIG EAST Male and Female Track Athlete of the Week honors as senior Chris Kinney was named Male Track Athlete of the Week and junior London Finley was named Female Track Athlete of the Week. Smith was named BIG EAST Male Field Athlete of the Week after winning the long jump at the SIU Fast Start Invitational on Dec. 3. Smith jumped an NCAA Division I season-best 7.82 meters, qualifying him for the BIG EAST Championships. He has the longest jump this season in NCAA Division I by almost a foot, and fell just three inches short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The jump was also a career-best mark for Smith. McCarty garnered BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week after winning the weight throw at the SIU Fast Start Invitational on Dec. 3. The two-time NCAA Champion in the weight throw had the second-longest toss of her career at 22.21 meters, making her one of only two throwers in the country to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The throw is the longest in NCAA Division I this season. Kinney earned BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week after running BIG EAST Championship-qualifying times in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. The senior placed first in the 60-meter hurdles at the Navy Invitational on Dec. 4, breaking the Wesley A. Brown Field House facility record with a time of 7.88 seconds. It is also the fastest time in NCAA Division I this season. His time of 22.32 seconds in the 200-meter dash placed him fifth at the meet. Finley was named BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Week after placing first in three events at the Bison Opener on Dec. 4. Finley finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.72 seconds, the 16th fastest time in NCAA Division I this season. She also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.28, the 10th-best time in NCAA Division I. Finley qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in both events. The junior capped an outstanding meet by running a split of 57.1 seconds in the 4x400-meter relay, helping the Hoyas capture first in the event with a time of 3:52.02. The next BIG EAST Track and Field Weekly Awards will be released on Jan. 11, 2011.
