Louisville Sweeps First BIG EAST Women's Track and Field Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Louisville seniors Margret Harris and Michelle Theophille earned BIG EAST Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards after impressive performances at the Hoosier Open in Bloomington, Ind., on Dec. 7.  On the men's side, Georgetown senior Bobby Peavey was named BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week and Rutgers junior Corey Crawford was named BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week.

Harris sprinted to a first-place finish in the 60-meter finals with a time of 7.38 to take BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors. Her time is a league best and ranks third nationally this season. Harris ran a personal best as well as posting the fourth-fastest time in school history for the Cardinals.

Theophille set a Louisville high jump record with a winning jump of 1.85 meters at the Hoosier Open to take the BIG EAST Women's Field Athlete of the Week award. The record was previously held by Rachel Gehret in 2009 at 1.82m, a mark Theophille tied last season. Theophille's jump currently ranks second nationally and first in the BIG EAST.

Crawford placed first in the long jump at the New Year's Invitational hosted by Princeton in Princeton, N.J., on Dec. 9 to garner BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors. The junior's mark of 7.60 meters ranks first in the league and first nationally. Crawford is 0.07 meters shy of breaking the Rutgers men's long jump record.

Peavey was named BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week after taking first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:23.30 at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., on Dec. 1. The senior currently holds the eighth-best time in the country and the top mark in the BIG EAST.

According to the NCAA, "qualification to the [NCAA] championships is based on the descending-order list for the season...for each individual event contested, the top 16 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition. For each relay contested, the top 12 relay teams will be accepted into the competition...There are no qualifying standards for the championships season."

The next BIG EAST track & field weekly honorees will be named the week of Jan. 14.
