MADISON, Wis. — The DePaul cross country teams opened up its 2013 campaigns on Friday afternoon at the Badger Opener hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
The Blue Demon men placed fourth in the event, while the women took fifth. Other competitors at the Opener included Marquette, Northwestern (women), Edgewood, Green Bay, Loyola (Chicago) and Wisconsin.
Three seniors paced DePaul on the men's side, finishing ahead of 11 Blue Demon runners. Senior Chris Miedema finished his day in 26th place out of 87 runners with a time of 19:42. Fellow seniors Herald Alvarez (30th) and Ryan Van Fossen (34th) posted times of 20:01 and 20:38, respectively.
On the women's side, the Blue Demons sent 10 competitors to the Badger Opener. They were led by junior Jackie Kasal, whose time of 14:51 in the 4K landed her in 27th place out of 121 runners. She was followed by junior Taylor Hynes (58th), who logged a time of 15:33 and freshman Jessica Sanborn, who finished in 62nd overall (15:39) in her collegiate debut.
The event was scheduled to be DePaul's second meet of the season but became the opener after last week's race at UIC was postponed. A makeup date has yet to be announced.
DePaul will next compete at the National Catholic Championships in South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 20. Race time is slated for 3:15 p.m.
