QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's cross country team continued its buildup to championship season on Saturday morning with an 18th-place finish at the 19th Annual Br. John "Paddy" Doyle/Iona Meet of Champions at famed Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
Saturday's meet, one of the region's most competitive of the early season, marked the Red Storm's first of four trips to Van Cortlandt Park this fall. The next time St. John's travels down to the Bronx will be to take part in the first championship meet of the campaign, the 2013 Metropolitan Championship on Oct. 11.
As she did in the Red Storm's season opener at the SJU-Hofstra Fall XC Festival, captain Michelle Duffy led the St. John's effort at the Meet of Champions, placing 67th overall in a time of 24:42 for the 6K course. The graduate student shaved almost 30 seconds from the time she posted on the last occasion the Red Storm competed at the same meet in 2011 and came within four seconds of equaling her personal best.
Crossing the finish line next for St. John's and within seven places of each other were sophomores Kerri Butler and Ashlin Conroy, who placed 92nd and 99th overall, respectively. Butler posted a time of 25:37 while Conroy covered the 6K course in 25:55.
Rounding out the Red Storm scorers were sophomores Michelle Van Pelt, who posted a time of 26:05, and Veronica Thompson, who broke into the St. John's top-5 for the first time this season with a run of 27:15. Classmate Jasmine Gomez also competed for the Red Storm, breaking the tape in 30:33.
St. John's returns to action on Oct. 11 at the Metropolitan Championship at Van Cortlandt Park.
