April 3, 2014
NEW YORK – Marquette’s Charles Lyon and Providence’s Emily Sisson were named the BIG EAST Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the league announced. Lyon plays soccer for the Golden Eagles and Sisson runs on the Friars’ cross country and track programs.
Lyon is a senior from St. Charles, Ill., while Sisson is a senior from Chesterfield, Mo. They both will receive $4,000 scholarships, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies. Lyon is Marquette’s first BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Sisson is the second consecutive BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year from Providence and sixth Friar honored since the award was first given in 1985.
Lyon carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.856, majoring in biomedical sciences. He was recognized as a Capital One Academic All-America First Team® honoree, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), in November. Marquette's co-captain led the team to its second BIG EAST Conference regular-season championship and first-ever BIG EAST tournament title in 2013 en route to being selected as the league's co-goalkeeper of the year. A two-time Academic All-District selection and three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team member, Lyon has posted 10 shutouts in each of the last two seasons, both times matching the single-season school record. He is also Marquette's all-time career leader in goals against average (0.82) and save percentage (.823).
MU has won 29 matches since Lyon took over as the starting goalkeeper at the beginning of the 2012 campaign, including a 1-0 clean sheet against former national champion Akron in the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship at Valley Fields this past fall.
Sisson is a management major who carries a 3.47 cumulative GPA. The two-time USTFCCCA Academic All-American is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the Division I Collegiate Athlete Honor Society, as well as Sigma Delti Pi, the National Spanish Honor Society. She was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team the past two seasons and helped the Friars become the 2013 USTFCCCA Division I Scholar Team of the Year among 217 women's programs.
Sisson’s bevy of athletic achievements include multiple First and Second Team All-America certificates in cross country, indoor and outdoor track; helping the Friars to their second NCAA cross country title in program history this past fall by placing seventh overall; and has won four individual titles at the BIG EAST Track Championships to go along with her 2013 individual cross country crown.
BIG EAST Scholar-Athletes of the Year were announced in conjunction with BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Marquette’s Katherine Plouffe was honored on the women’s side while Butler’s Alex Barlow garnered the men’s distinction.
