2013 ONLINE SCHEDULE
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville cross country program announced its 2013 slate on Tuesday. In addition to two in-state meets, the Cardinals will compete in the highly competitive Wisconsin adidas Invitational halfway into the year.
“I would say the schedule fits into the usual philosophy of the pattern of trying to race every two weeks, with the only difference being the two-week break between Kentucky and our home meet,” assistant coach Joe Walker said. “That’s where our mileage peak is at, so it’s good for training purposes.”
For the seventh-straight season, the Cardinals open the year just north of Louisville at the Mid-America Opener in Evansville, Ind. The meet is scheduled to be held on Aug. 31 at the University of Evansville cross country course.
Tyler Byrne won the Mid-America Opener men’s event title in 2012, his second career individual crown from that meet. Collectively, the Cardinal men won the team title for the fifth time in the last six years. On the women’s side, Michelle Molodynia paced the group with a runner-up finish, while the group took first overall.
Two weeks later on Sept. 14, the Cardinals travel east to the Bluegrass Cross Country Invitational in Lexington, Ky. The last time Louisville competed in a meet in the state that resided outside of Louisville was 2005, when the squad traveled to the Woodford Trials in Versailles, Ky.
“We get two good, hilly courses to start the season during a period when you’re working really hard, and then you roll into a really fast, competitive home meet that sets up well,” Walker added.
On Oct. 5, Louisville heads to its home course for the ninth annual Greater Louisville Classic, which is hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission. In a stacked competition that featured two top-10 teams in the men’s race, Louisville took sixth, with Japhet Kipkoech
placing eighth overall.
Louisville is idle for two weeks before heading to the highly competitive Wisconsin adidas Invitational, an opportunity for the men’s and women’s squads to strengthen their bids to the national championships, in Madison on Oct. 19. The men’s race features more than 30 teams, including powerhouses Arizona, Arkansas, Northern Arizona, and Oklahoma. The women’s lineup is expected to showcase Providence, Arizona, Duke, and Washington.
“Wisconsin gives us the opportunity to line up against potentially 20 ranked teams and that national feel,” Walker said. “You’re in a large field of people moving fast and, the way our sport works, you have to have an ability to match up with those teams for qualifying purposes. If you run well, you set yourself up for November.”
After heading to the American Athletic Conference Championships on Nov. 2 in Storrs, Conn., the Cardinals travel east to the NCAA Southeast Regional in Charlottesville, Va. The University of Virginia will serve as the host institution for the Nov. 15 meet. The top two finishing teams in each race automatically qualify for nationals.
“I’m not familiar with the conference course well yet, but we’ll plan on representing Louisville well at the AAC,” Walker stated. “It’s a new league for us, and hopefully a chance to chase a title.
“The regional course, from everything I understand at the University of Virginia, is a very challenging course with a lot of rolling hills. We’ll get ourselves prepared for that environment and then come off of that and recover for the national championships in Terre Haute.”
The cross country season concludes with the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 23, marking the second time since World War II that the championships will be held on a Saturday instead of Monday. The meet returns to Terre Haute Ind., after being held in Louisville last year. It will be the 76th annual men's competition and 34th annual women's competition.
