CHICAGO -- The DePaul men's and women's cross country teams travel to Palos Heights, Ill., on Saturday (Aug. 31) to kick off its 2013 season at the UIC Home Opener.
The event will begin at 10 a.m.
Saturday's action will feature seven schools, including crosstown rivals Northwestern and UIC. Filling out the final four slots will be Milwaukee, Green Bay, Chicago State and St. Xavier.
DePaul will be participating at the UIC competition for the first time since 2011. The Blue Demons' Matthew Graham, a senior at the time, captured first place on the men's side two years ago with a time of 20:29.5. The only active Blue Demons who raced that day are seniors Chris Miedema and Lucas Junk, who placed 19th and 56th, respectively.
On the women's side, then-freshman Jackie Kasal paced DePaul with a 13th-place finish (11:51.7). Kasal, now a junior, juniors Danielle Hernando and Taylor Hynes and senior Hannah Pulliam all competed at the UIC Home Opener in 2011 and will be active during the 2013 campaign.
The UIC Home Opener is the first of seven events for the Blue Demons this fall. The 2013 cross country schedule is highlighted by the BIG EAST Championship on Nov. 2 in Kenosha, Wis.
"[The new BIG EAST format] is a reset for everyone in the new conference. It’s time to move up. More than anything else, I’m really looking forward to watching our team rise up in the new BIG EAST," head coach Dave Dopek said last week. "I expect us to do very well."
Following the UIC competition, DePaul will travel to the Badger Open in Madison, Wis., on Sept. 6.
