Louisville and Syracuse Earn First BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the Week Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Louisville junior Tyler Byrne and Syracuse sophomore Katie Fliescher were named BIG EAST Cross Country Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in the opening week of competition.


Byrne finished first overall with a time of 17:53.16 at the Mid-America Opener in Evansville, Ind., on Sept. 1. Byrne's performance helped the Cardinals to a 19-point win over Evansville. The junior recorded his second consecutive first-place finish at the Mid-America Opener. Byrne's time of 17:53.16 topped his previous personal best on a 6K course by 37 seconds.


Fliescher finished second overall at the Harry Lang Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y., with a time of 16:02 on the 4200m course on Sept. 1. The sophomore led No. 9 Syracuse to a first-place team finish over Bucknell, Navy, University of Buffalo, Colgate, Holy Cross, American, Utica College, Nazareth, Stevens Institute and College of St. Rose. The Orange won the meet by 44 points.
