LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville's Tyler Byrne is the American Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, league officials announced on Tuesday.
Byrne, the Cardinals' top finisher on Saturday, placed second at the Bluegrass Cross Country Invitational in Lexington, Ky. His time of 23:47.47 in the 8K race, the 14th-fastest mark for that distance in school history, came against runners from top-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 11 Eastern Kentucky. Byrne finished behind Eastern Kentucky's Soufiane Bouchikhi, who was named this week's USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week.
The Cardinals' men's squad, which finished third in the team standings, currently stands at No. 7 in the southeast region, while the women's team took second in the race and holds the No. 8 position in the regional rankings.
Louisville is idle this weekend, but returns to action on Oct. 5 for the Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park.
