10 BIG EAST Cross Country Teams Stay in Week 2 USTFCCCA Top 30

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Six BIG EAST women's cross country teams and four men's teams rank among the top 30 in the nation according to the week two USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll released on Tuesday. Most of the BIG EAST teams remained in the same spots they occupied a week ago, with the Villanova women maintaining the No. 1 ranking in the country. Syracuse is the highest ranked squad on the men's side at No. 9.

Syracuse was the only ranked team on the men's side to compete last weekend, as the Orange cruised to a first-place finish at the Colgate Invitational on Sept. 18 to remain at No. 9. The squad claimed the top five spots, finishing with a perfect score of 15 points, 35 points ahead of second-place Colgate.

Villanova remains at No. 14 in the rankings, with the Wildcats opening their season Sept. 23 at the Main Line Invitational. Providence moved up a slot to No. 19, while Georgetown stayed at No. 25. The Friars next compete on Oct. 2 at the adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis., while the Hoyas are in action on Oct. 1 at the Paul Short Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind.

Notre Dame and Syracuse were the only ranked teams to compete on the women's side. The Irish won the National Catholic Invitational on Sept. 17 with a total of 41 points. The meet included 35 schools, with freshman Meg Ryan placing first individually to lead the way for Notre Dame. Despite the victory, Notre Dame slipped from No. 15 to No. 26 in the polls. Syracuse held steady at No. 10 with a victory at the Colgate Invitational. Orange runners finished in spots two through six totaling 23 points to beat out second-place Cornell.

No. 1 Villanova has yet to compete this year, but the Wildcats will kick-off their season on Sept. 23 at the Main Line Invitational. Georgetown jumped one spot to No. 6, while Providence held at No. 14 and West Virginia moved to No. 16.

The next national poll will be announced on Sept. 28. The BIG EAST Conference Championship will be held at James Beach County Park in Jamesville, N.Y. on Oct. 30. The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be held on Monday, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
