Connecticut Readies for New England Championships

Oct. 9, 2013

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s cross country team will compete in the New England Championships this Saturday at Harvard’s home course at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. Start time for the women’s 5k is listed for 12:30pm on October 12th.

Coach Amy Begley will bring six Huskies to compete in Boston on Saturday: Emily Durgin, Brigitte Mania, Abby Mace, Emily Howard, Kat Vodopia, and Laura Williamson. Coach Begley points out that, while the team is made up of five sophomores and one senior, “they are a young team that shows a lot of heart in workouts and races.”

Emily Durgin (Portland, Maine) has headlined the UConn squad as its clutch performer thus far this season. The sophomore has led all Connecticut runners with one second-place and two third-place finishes in the team’s first three invitationals. Brigitte Mania (Flemington, N.J.), the lone senior in the pack, has finished right on Durgin’s heels this season and will look to match her in Saturday’s race. Durgin, Mania, and sophomore Abby Mace (Maranacook, Maine) have consistently finished each race as the top three UConn contenders. “Durgin, Mania and Mace have continued to show their strength in workouts.  Emily Howard has made progress toward closing the gap with the top three.  This weekend we are looking for a big performance from Kat or Laura to round out the top five,” says Coach Begley.

In anticipation of the weekend, Coach Begley notes, “we are coming off two weeks of training without racing. The athletes are excited to spike up for New Englands this weekend.”
