QUEENS, N.Y. – A week removed from its first championship meet of the season, the St. John’s women’s cross country is back in action on Friday, Oct. 18 in Providence, R.I. at the Brown Invitational hosted by Brown University.
Friday’s race, a new addition to the Red Storm’s schedule, will be St. John’s final October competition before a trio of championship meets in November.
“We are looking forward to competing at the Brown Invitational this weekend as it is a new meet on our schedule,” said Red Storm head coach Jim Hurt. “We are expecting to see a consistent team effort from all our runners as our young team keeps gaining more experience at the collegiate level with each race.”
St. John’s sophomore-laden squad is coming off an eighth-place finish at the 2013 Metropolitan Cross Country Championships at famed Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. on Oct. 11. For the third time this season, captain Michelle Duffy led the way for the Red Storm, placing 31st out of 124 runners. Duffy covered the 5K course in 19:57.04.
Drafting off of Duffy, the Red Storm’s second through fifth runners all finished within 25 seconds of each other, as sophomores Kerri Butler, Veronica Thompson, Stephanie Van Pelt and Michelle Van Pelt finished among the race’s top-55 competitors. Last week’s “Mets” marked the first time in the St. John’s top-3 for Thompson, who broke into the top-5 for the first time of her career the previous week at the Iona Meet of Champions.
