Women's Soccer Enters Final Weekend of Regular Season
The regular season enters the final weekend of league play with every team in the conference having one final BIG EAST match. All six byes to the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals have been clinched by West Virginia, Marquette and Syracuse in the American Division and Louisville, Georgetown and Notre Dame in the National Division. Heading into the weekend, seven teams are eligible for the final four playoff spots. The regular season division crowns are still waiting to be claimed.
High Stakes for Field Hockey
Connecticut and Syracuse have earned the first two spots in the BIG EAST Championship and will play each other on Oct. 23 at noon in a regular-season matchup. The winner of this game will become the No. 1 seed in the tournament and will clinch at least a share of the regular-season crown. Each of the last three regular-season matchups between Connecticut and Syracuse has been decided by one goal. The Huskies lead the all-time series 25-9-1, but the Orange have won the last two regular-season games (both in double overtime). Villanova and Louisville also have high-profile games this weekend as the Wildcats take on Georgetown and the Cardinals host Providence, both on Oct. 21. Both teams are still working to capture the remaining two spots at the Championship.
UConn Player Earns ECAC Women's Volleyball Honors; Cincinnati Continues Streak
Connecticut junior Mattison Quayle was named the ECAC Division I Player of the week for her performance last week after she led the Huskies to a 2-0 record, averaging 5.13 kills per set. In BIG EAST women's volleyball team news, Cincinnati improved on the nation's longest home winning streak with a win against Western Kentucky on Oct. 18, making it 43 straight wins at home.
Men's Soccer Promoted Nationally This Weekend
BIG EAST men's soccer will be represented in a national TV game on Friday night. Providence will travel to West Virginia for a game on Oct. 21 that will be shown on FOX Soccer Channel at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers are coming off a 2-0 win over previously undefeated and top-ranked Connecticut. On Saturday, the remaining 14 teams will be in action, fighting for position with only three games left in the regular season. There will be a top-25 showdown when No. 1/1 Connecticut hosts No. 24/NR Georgetown. There are six BIG EAST teams ranked in the top 25 of the NSCAA poll and five in the Soccer America Top 25.
Women's Cross Country Has Seven Teams Ranked in the Top 30, Four in the Top 10
There are seven BIG EAST women's cross country teams ranked in the top 30 of this week's national poll, with four of those teams in the top 10. The highest ranked team is No. 4 Villanova, followed closely by No. 6 Georgetown, No. 7 Providence and No. 9 Syracuse. They are joined by No. 18 West Virginia, No. 23 Notre Dame and No. 28 Connecticut. The BIG EAST continues to lead with conference representation as the seven teams are the highest, followed by six from the Pac-12 and five from the ACC.
Providence, Villanova and Notre Dame Lead Men's Cross Country in the National Poll
There are three BIG EAST men's cross country teams ranked in the top 30 of this week's national poll. The teams are led by No. 14 Providence, with No. 16 Villanova following closely behind, along with No. 29 Notre Dame. There will be one more ranking before next weekend's BIG EAST Championship at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
