Louisville, Ky. - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team (40-15, 18-6 Big East) fell 7-4 at No. 10 Louisville (46-10, 20-4 Big East) to wrap up their regular season this afternoon at Patterson Stadium.

"Obviously we're disappointed that we did not win today," said head coach Joe Jordano. "However, I really liked how hard we played and how we continued to play that way to the final out."

Cody Ege (4-1) earned the win while Rhys Aldenhoven (JR/Victoria, Australia) (8-1) took the loss.

Pitt had its first two runners on in the first and second innings but were unable to cash in. Louisville got on the board first in the bottom of the third when it scored five to take the lead.

The Panthers answered back with a pair in the top of the fourth. Casey Roche (JR/Downingtown, Pa.) led off the frame by working a walk. Boo Vazquez (SO/Youngstown, Pa.) followed with a sharply hit single through the right side off the glove of a diving first baseman. Steven Shelinsky Jr. (JR/Yardley, Pa.) then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. John Peluso (SR/Bethlehem, Pa.) and Sam Parente (SR/Pittston, Pa.) plated the runs with RBI groundouts before the Cardinals were able to get out of the inning with limited harm inflicted on a groundout to third.

Elvin Soto (SO/New York, N.Y.) ripped a double into the gap in left center to score Stephen Vranka (JR/Monroeville, Pa.) in the top of the fifth to cut further into the UL lead.

The Cardinals started the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff double but Aldenhoven was able to pitch around trouble with a soft flyout to center and a pair of groundouts to end his day after 5.0 innings of work.

UL was able to get a run in the bottom of the sixth on an infield single but left the bases loaded as J.R. Leonardi (JR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) was able to get Jeff Gardner to popup to Soto behind the plate.

In the top of the seventh, Dylan Wolsonovich (FR/Ford City, Pa.) drew a leadoff walk. Vranka followed with a single into center but the Panthers were unable to capitalize as the score remained 6-3.

Louisville added another run in the bottom of the seventh to take a four run lead into the final two innings.

Pitt loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with one out and were able to get a run on an Evan Oswald (SR/Butler, Pa.) fielder's choice but were unable to get any more runs.

Joseph Harvey (SO/Audobon, Pa.) retired the Cardinals in order in the bottom of the eighth bringing the Panthers down to their final three outs.

Pitt loaded the bases in the top of the ninth but left them all stranded as the Cardinals completed the sweep.

The Panthers will be back in action at the Big East Tournament on Wednesday at Brighthouse Field in Clearwater, Fla. Matchups and times will be determined later in the evening.
