Louisville's Engel and Rutgers' Smorol Earn Week 2 BIG EAST Baseball Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville outfielder Adam Engel was named BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week after a 4-0 week for the Cardinals. Rutgers' Rob Smorol was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for throwing eight scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over Old Dominion.

 

Engel combined for eight stolen bases, six runs scored, five RBI, two doubles and a triple in a 4-0 week for Louisville. The junior went 6-for-15 and converted on all eight of his steal attempts. Engel became the fifth Cardinal all-time to steal four bases in a game in a 7-0 victory over Akron.

 

Smorol pitched eight scoreless innings against Old Dominion, striking out seven and allowing four hits. The senior also allowed just one walk, leading the Scarlet Knights to their first win of the season.

Yavarone hit .417 (5-for-12) with one home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 2-1 week for the Huskies.

 

Chad Green, Louisville, Jr., RHP

Green allowed just one hit in seven innings and struck out five in a 7-0 win over Akron.

 

Sean Fitzgerald, Notre Dame, Jr., RHP

Fitzgerald held Tulane to one run in six innings, giving up just four hits in a 2-1 win over the Green Wave.

 

Eric Jagielo, Notre Dame, Jr., 3B

Jagielo went 4-for-9 with a double, one home run and four RBI in the series sweep of Tulane.

 

Tyler Sciacca, Villanova, Sr., SS

Sciacca led the Villanova offense in a 6-3 win over La Salle, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
