PROVIDENCE, R.I. -Connecticut sophomore LJ Mazzilli was selected as the BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week and Notre Dame senior Will Hudgins was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the week after the fourth week of action.
Mazzilli batted .462 (6-13) and had a .611 on-base percentage and a .846 slugging percentage in a 2-2 weekend for the Huskies at the Nike Showcase. He recorded a hit in all four games and has hit successfully in 13 out of 14 games this season. Mazzilli led the UConn offense with three runs scored and four RBIs. Three of his six hits went for extra bases including two RBI doubles against No. 22 Oklahoma and a home run, his second of the year, against Oregon State.
Hudgins struck out a career-best 11 in 8.0 shutout innings to lead Notre Dame to a 2-0 victory over Michigan on Saturday. The 11 punch outs were the most by an Irish pitcher in the 129 all-time meetings between the Irish and Wolverines. He stuck out the side in the fifth inning. He threw 110 pitches, including 86 strikes.
