Chester, DiRocco Earn Week 5 BIG EAST Baseball Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Pittsburgh senior David Chester has been named BIG EAST baseball Player of the Week while Seton Hall senior Joe DiRocco earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 20 as announced by the conference office on Monday. Chester becomes the second straight Pittsburgh player to earn Player of the Week honors. The senior led the conference in home runs (4), slugging percentage (1.087) and tied for first in RBI (11) last week. He led the Panthers to a 4-2 record, collecting at least one hit in each of the six contests. Chester drove in three runs in three of the games, including twice against Niagara and once against Toledo. He hit .435 for the week with 10 hits in 23 at-bats and eight runs scored. DiRocco earns his third Pitcher of the Week honor of the year after tossing a complete-game shutout at home against Stony Brook on March 19. The senior allowed just three hits while walking one to lead the Pirates to a 2-0 win. DiRocco also struck out six batters while lowering his ERA to 1.35 on the season. He ranks second in the conference in opponent batting average (.159) and wins (3). The three BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors are the most by one player in a single season since Boston College's Chris Lambert earned three in 2003. Seven BIG EAST teams enter the week with winning streaks of three games or longer. Six BIG EAST teams have winning records. Both St. John's and Georgetown finished last week with 4-0 records as eight of the 12 BIG EAST schools were over .500 last week. Conference play kicks off on Friday, March 25.
