PROVIDENCE, R.I. Rutgers senior Patrick Kivlehan was selected as the BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week and Villanova junior Stephen Ostapeck was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the week after the first weekend of BIG EAST play.
Kivlehan helped lead Rutgers to a 3-1 record last week. He batted 9-for-13 (.692) in four games with two home runs and seven RBIs. He also walked four times and was hit by a pitch twice to post a .789 on base percentage. In the BIG EAST series against Seton Hall, he reached base in 12-of-15 plate appearances (.800 OBP), with seven hits (.700 BA).
Ostapeck pitched a three-hit shutout in an 8-0 win over St. John's. He allowed just one runner to reach scoring position after the second inning and only seven batters hit the ball out of the infield during the entire game. He was making only the second conference start of his career. With the shutout he became the first Villanova pitcher since 1996 to have two complete game shutouts in a season.
