PROVIDENCE, R.I. St. John's senior Matt Wessingerwas selected as the BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week and Louisville freshman Jared Ruxer was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the week after the fourth weekend of BIG EAST play.
Wessinger batted a team-best .526 and added team-highs in runs (10), RBIs (10), slugging percentage (.737), on-base percentage (.583) and stolen bases (3-for-3) as part of a 3-2 week for St. John's that included a series win against Connecticut. The shortstop had four multi-RBI games, three multi-games, including one four-hit performance and scored at least one run in all five contests.
Ruxer pitched 6.0 shutout innings, allowing just three hits with a career-best six strikeouts to lead No. 19 Louisville to a 12-0 win at No. 1 Kentucky. Ruxer led the way as the Cardinals became the first team this season to shut out the Wildcats. Ruxer is 5-0 with a 1.98 ERA this season and has won five of his six starts as a Cardinal.
