St. John's, West Virginia Earn BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - St. John's junior shortstop Joe Panik earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors while West Virginia senior righthander Andy Berry was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 17 as announced by the conference office on Monday. Panik earns BIG EAST Player of the Week honors after leading St. John's to a sweep over Louisville. Panik batted .429 (6-for-14) with a double, a home run, six RBI and a .714 slugging percentage. The shortstop had two multi-hit games and had an RBI in all three contests, including four in the series finale. Panik also scored two runs and posted a .467 on-base percentage. The junior went 2-for-5 with an RBI in the opener before a 1-for-5 performance that included the game-tying RBI as part of the Red Storm's three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Panik went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI in the finale. Berry earns BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing a complete game on 113 pitches to earn a 3-1 win at Notre Dame. Berry allowed just three hits, with the lone run coming on a solo home run. He also struck out five and walked just three to earn his team-best fifth win of the season. Through four weekends of play, Connecticut holds a two-game lead on first place in the BIG EAST. St. John's became the first BIG EAST team to sweep Louisville in a three-game series since the Cardinals joined the conference in 2005. Connecticut righty Matt Barnes won his seventh-straight start after beating Villanova in the first game of the series. Seton Hall's Joe DiRocco and Louisville's Justin Amlung are the only starting pitchers in the conference without a loss this season. WVU's Grant Buckner has a 16-game hitting streak entering this week.
