PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Connecticut outfielder George Springer earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors while St. John's sophomore righthander Kyle Hansen was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 24 as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Springer earns BIG EAST Player of the Week honors after leading Connecticut to a 5-0 week including a sweep of BIG EAST foe Georgetown. Springer recorded his 40th career home run in UConn's 14-2 victory on Friday. He is currently on an 18-game hitting streak, helping Connecticut to a 16-2 record in that span. On the week, the junior batted .476 in five games with 10 hits, nine runs scored and 14 RBI. Springer had four multiple-hit games and three multiple-RBI games. He was also 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. He added an on-base percentage of .478 and a slugging percentage of .952.
Hansen earns BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing his first career complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win against Notre Dame. Hansen racked up a career-high 15 strikeouts, the most by a BIG EAST pitcher since USF's Andrew Barbosa had 16 on April 2, 2010. The righty allowed just four hits, walked none and worked six 1-2-3 innings. Hansen did not allow a runner past second base and surrendered just a .133 (4-for-30) batting average in the contest.
Four BIG EAST teams went unbeaten last week including Connecticut (5-0), Pittsburgh (4-0), Cincinnati (3-0) and St. John's (2-0). Connecticut righty Matt Barnes has won eight-straight starts after defeating Georgetown last week. Three BIG EAST pitchers tossed complete-game shutouts over the weekend including St. John's Hansen (vs. Notre Dame), Connecticut's Barnes (vs. Georgetown) and Pittsburgh's Matt Iannazzo (vs. Rutgers). St. John's is 11-0 at home this season after winning two games against Notre Dame.
