BIG EAST Baseball Statistics
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - St. John's junior Frank Schwindel and Seton Hall's Brian Gilbert earned BIG EAST baseball weekly honors after leading their teams to statement wins last week.
Schwindel was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after he went 7-for-12 (.583) in a series win over Notre Dame to help the Red Storm clinch a bid to the BIG EAST championship. The junior tallied three RBI, three runs scored, one home run and one double. Schwindel ranks in the top five in the league in four offensive categories, including hits (third, 75), RBI (fourth, 50), doubles (third, 19) and total bases (fifth, 109).
Gilbert was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week after recording two saves and a win in Seton Hall's sweep of USF. The junior picked up the win and one save in the Friday doubleheader to clinch the series. In 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, Gilbert surrendered one hit and one walk.
2013 BIG EAST Championship Field Set
- Louisville, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall and USF punched their tickets to the championship two weeks ago.
- Rutgers, Connecticut, Notre Dame and St. John's clinched their spots last weekend.
- Louisville, Pittsburgh and Seton Hall will battle it out for the No. 1 seed and regular-season championship this weekend. Louisville hosts Pittsburgh and Seton Hall hosts St. John's.
The 2013 BIG EAST Baseball Championship at Bright House Field begins Wednesday May 22. All games will be available on ESPN3 with the championship game on May 26 on ESPNU.
Kyle Funkhouser, Louisville, Fr., RHP
Funkhouser pitched a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks in a win against Eastern Kentucky.
Casey Roche, Pittsburgh, Jr., OF
Roche went 6-for-13 (.462) with four doubles, four RBI and three walks in a 4-0 week for the Panthers.
Rob Smorol, Rutgers, Sr., LHP
Smorol tossed four strikeouts, and surrended three walks and two hits in seven innings of work in a win against Georgetown.
James Lomangino, St. John's, Jr., RHP
Lomangino pitched a complete-game with 10 strikeouts to secure the series win against Notre Dame. The junior surrendered one run, two walks and five hits.
Sal Annunziata, Seton Hall, So., 1B
Annunziata went 5-for-12 (.417) in a series sweep of USF last week. The sophomore tallied two RBI, one double and one run scored in the series.
