NEW YORK – It came right down to the final day – the final out, in fact – to determine which team would claim the fourth and final berth to the 2014 BIG EAST Baseball Championship presented by New York Life to be held next week at MCU Park in Brooklyn, N.Y.

In the end, it was Creighton (30-16-1, 14-4 BIG EAST) that took the BIG EAST regular-season crown and tournament’s top seed, while Xavier (26-26, 8-10), despite dropping its last two games to the Bluejays, emerging as the fourth and final team in the bracket as the No. 4 seed.

After playing each other three times in three days in Cincinnati, Creighton and Xavier will renew their acquaintances Thursday in the opener of the BIG EAST Tournament at MCU Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., with first pitch just after 4 p.m. Eastern.

Thursday’s nightcap will feature another repeat matchup from the last regular-season series when No. 2 seed St. John’s (35-18, 13-5) battles third-seeded Seton Hall (38-13, 11-7). The Red Storm took two of three from the Pirates in South Orange, with Seton Hall salvaging the third game Saturday. Each of the last two games were decided by just one run.

Tickets for Thursday’s doubleheader and all games of the BIG EAST Tournament are on sale at brooklyncyclones.com or by calling (718) 507-TIXX.

After falling to Creighton 7-6 in 12 innings in Saturday’s finale, Xavier had to wait and see what happened in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., where Butler and Villanova were squaring off in a doubleheader. Entering the day, Xavier’s magic number to clinch the last playoff berth was just one. Butler needed two wins and help in order to overtake the Musketeers.

And it nearly happened.

Butler beat Villanova 4-2 in Saturday’s twinbill opener and Creighton beat Xavier, but the Bulldogs staked Villanova to a 3-0 lead in game two. Quincy Quintero’s two-RBI single to right in the top of the eighth inning brought the Bulldogs within 3-2, but that’s as close as they would get. Matthew Meurer pitched a perfect ninth to close the door for Villanova and send Butler home without a playoff spot.

After the tournament opens with Thursday’s doubleheader, another will take place Friday beginning at 4 p.m. The losers from Thursday’s game will meet in the opener in an elimination game, while Thursday’s winners battle in the nightcap with a bid to Sunday’s championship game at stake. On Saturday at 3 p.m., Friday’s game one winner will take on the second game’s loser, with that winner advancing to Sunday.

Linacre Media, a streaming partner of the BIG EAST, will produce live presentations of the tournament’s first five games for BIGEAST.com. Sunday’s championship game will air nationally on FOX Sports 1 at 1 p.m.
