CLEARWATER, Fla. - Centerfielder Charlie Markson went 4-for-5 with a home run and four runs scored and starting pitcher Will Hudgins gave Notre Dame seven shutout innings as the Irish took a 9-0 win against Rutgers in the second day of the BIG EAST Baseball Championship Thursday at Bright House Field.

Notre Dame (30-27), which dropped its opening game of the BIG EAST Championship Wednesday, remains alive in the double-elimination bracket to face either Seton Hall or St. John's Friday at 3 p.m. Rutgers (31-25) was eliminated following its second loss of the tournament.

Markson provided the bulk of the offense as the Irish finished with 14 hits off of five Rutgers pitchers. Hudgins, meanwhile, scattered just four hits and struck out five without allowing a run to improve his record to 5-3.

Markson's solo home run in the top of the first provided the only run Notre Dame needed, but the Irish added two more in the top of the third on an RBI double to leftfield by Joe Hudson and Alex Robinson's fielder's choice that brought in Trey Mancini and gave Notre Dame a 3-0 lead.

Notre Dame added four runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of five singles, a squeeze bunt and a pair of Scarlet Knight errors to build a 7-0 lead. Robinson and designated hitter Alex DeFilippis dropped back-to-back squeeze bunts and Mac Hudgins followed with a base hit to leftfield to give the Irish a six-run cushion.

Hudson and Markson added RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings to put the Irish ahead by nine runs after seven innings.

The lead was plenty for Hudgins, who denied Rutgers' bids to get back in the game by inducing double-play grounders to end the sixth and seventh innings.

Markson was one of five Notre Dame players with multiple hits as Mancini, Hudson, Mac Hudgins and Tommy Chase had two hits each.

Two of Rutgers' four hits came from the bat of second baseman Nick Favatella, who went 2-for-3 with a double. Rob Smorol took the loss after he allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 4.2 innings.
