Connecticut Staves Off Elimination on Second Day of NCAA Baseball Regionals

St. John's and Seton Hall both moved into the winners' bracket of the 2011 NCAA Baseball Regionals after picking up wins on the first day of action on Friday. St. John's defeated East Carolina 2-0 in the Charlottesville Regional, while Seton Hall shutout Arizona 4-0 in the College Station Regional. Connecticut dropped its first game to Coastal Carolina 13-1 in the Clemson Regional. Games continue at 16 different regional sites on Saturday. Texas A&M 6, Seton Hall 3 Box Score College Station Regional Central Sophomore Jon Prosinski fired a complete-game shutout to lead Seton Hall (34-23) past Arizona 4-0 in the first game of the College Station Regional on Friday. It was the ninth-straight win for the Pirates and the team's first NCAA Championship victory since 2001. Prosinski gave up just six hits over nine innings while striking out three and walking one to lower his season ERA to 1.91. The sophomore did not allow a baserunner to reach third base during the game. Senior Sean Gusrang and sophomore Giuseppe Papaccio each had two hits while Papaccio and Will Walsh had one RBI apiece. The Pirates will battle No. 1 seed Texas A&M at 7:35 p.m. ET on Saturday. Virginia 10, St. John's 2 Box Score Charlottesville Regional Central Sophomore Sean Hagan worked 7.1 scoreless innings to lift St. John's (36-20) past East Carolina 2-0 in the Charlottesville Regional on Friday. Hagan allowed nine hits and two walks while striking out six to pick up the win. Sophomore Matt Carasiti got the final five outs of the game to get the save, allowing only hit. Sophomore Jimmy Brennan went 3-for-5 in the game, and drove in what would prove to be the game-winning RBI with a single in the third that scored senior Paul Karmas. St. John's added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Grove in the fourth. The Red Storm will face No. 1 seed Virginia at 6 p.m. ET, on Saturday. Connecticut 13, Sacred Heart 3 Box Score Clemson Regional Central Connecticut (41-18-1) dropped a 13-1 decision to Coastal Carolina in the Clemson Regional on Friday. BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, Matt Barnes, was tagged with seven runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work. LJ Mazzilli finished 3-for-4 on the afternoon while driving in the lone run for the Huskies. Connecticut will take on No. 4 seed Sacred Heart at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday in an elimination game.
